Follow these steps if you are applying for:
- A passport in a different name than that on your last Australian passport
- A passport with a different gender marker than that on your last Australian passport
Click on the below link to the Australian Passport Office website, then select Apply or Renew and create an account.
Answer the questions to tell the system that you are applying for a new passport overseas with a name and/or gender change. You will be directed to complete the Overseas Passport Application Form.
When you have completed the form online, come back to this page to follow the rest of the steps.
We accept original documents only. Photocopies and certified copies are not accepted.
You must provide proof of citizenship and proof of identity and name and/or gender change documents.
Proof of citizenship
If you were born in Australia, you must provide your Australian birth certificate
- If you were born on or after 28 August 1986, you must also provide:
- One of your previous Australian passports (not an emergency passport)
- One of your parent's Australian birth certificates
- One of your parent's Australian citizenship certificates, dated before you were born
- One of your parent's Australian passports that was valid when you were born
- Your own Australian citizenship certificate if you have none of the above
OR
If you were born outside Australia, you must provide your Australian citizenship certificate
- AND one of the following:
- Previous Australian passport
- Non-Australian birth certificate
- Valid non-Australian passport
Proof of identity
You must provide one of the three below combinations of identity documents:
Combination 1 - 1x category A document, 1x category B document, and 1x category C document
OR
Combination 2 - 2x category B documents including photo ID, and 1x category C document
OR
Combination 3 - at least 3x category C documents, and an official document that incudes your photo and signature
Category A - must not be expired
Driving licence - Australian or non-Australian
Australian proof of age card
Non-Australian residency card
Category B - must not be expired
Non-Australian passport
Medicare card
Bank credit or debit card
National insurance card
Previous Australian passport - if it expired less than 10 years ago
Category C - must include your full name and current address AND must not be older than six months

Evidence of gender change
The gender markers we use in Australian passports are M (male), F (female) and X (non-binary/indeterminate/intersex/unspecified/other). For further information visit the Australian Passport Office website.
When you have read the information and completed the required form, come back to this page to follow the rest of the steps.
A guarantor is someone who will be named on your application form. They will sign the form and one of your passport photos to confirm your identity.
Your guarantor must meet all of the following criteria:
- They are at least 18 years old
- They have known you for at least one year
- They are not related to you by birth or marriage
- They do not live with you
- They are willing and able to speak to us about your application if needed
Your guarantor must also meet one of the following criteria:
- Hold a current Australian passport
OR
- Be currently employed in one of the following occupations:
- Chartered/Certified Accountants
- Chartered Professional Engineers
- Judges, Barristers and Solicitors
- Registered Medical Practitioners (Doctors and GPs only), Dentists, Pharmacists
- Registered Nurses, Chiropractors, Optometrists, Physiotherapists and Psychologists
- Registered Veterinary Surgeons
- Members of Parliament, elected City, County and District Councillors
- Police Officers with at least five years continuous service
- Members currently serving in the regular Australian or British Defence Force with at least five years continuous service
- Ministers of Religion and Marriage Celebrants
- Teachers - full-time, who have been teaching for more than five years
- Civil Servants/Local Government employees - full-time, who have been employed continuously for at least five years by their current employer
- Bank Branch Managers - manager of a High Street bank, but not managers of investment or business branches, building societies, bank travel centres, loan centres or line mangers within a bank
Your guarantor can be located in any country. They do not need to be in the United Kingdom or Australia.
Australian passport photos are different to UK passport photos. Please check with your photographer if they can take photos that meet our guidelines. Do not use a photobooth.

Using a black pen, your guarantor must write the following on the back of one photo:
"THIS IS A TRUE PHOTO OF"
APPLICANT'S NAME
GUARANTOR'S SIGNATURE
After you have completed the form online you will need to print it. Check the entire form has been printed and there is nothing missing at the top or bottom of the form.
Check the details on the form are correct and make any amendments by hand, signing/initialling next to any changes.
Using a black pen, the following sections must be completed by hand:
Section 11 - your guarantor must sign, date, and write their contact phone number in the declaration
Section 17 - you must sign, date, write your full name, and tick the applicant box
Section 18 - you must sign this box with the signature that will appear on your new passport
- Check your signature is fully within the signature box
- If any part of your signature is outside the box or is touching the edges of the box, you will need to print and sign the form again
Check that all dates are within the last six months and do not use correction fluid or tape on the application form.
You must submit your application in person. There is no option to submit your application by post. No one else can submit your application on your behalf.
You must book an appointment. There is no walk-in service.
Do not bring any family members or friends with you.
You must clear through security checks to enter our building. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment time.

We occasionally visit other major cities across the UK as part of our outreach service. Contact us to see if there is an outreach visit scheduled near you.
The fee for an adult passport is AUD$611.
If you are aged 75 years or older, you can choose to apply for either the 10-year passport AUD$611, or a 5-year passport for a reduced fee of AUD$402.
If you have more than two years validity left on your current passport, you can choose a replacement passport, where you will be issued a new passport with the same expiry date as your current passport. This costs AUD$265.
The replacement passport is free of charge* if your name/gender change is due to one of the following reasons:
- Marriage
- Divorce
- Entering into or ceasing to be in a registered or de facto relationship
- The death of a spouse or partner
- Transitioning to a new gender
*Please note that in order to issue you the passport free of charge, we will need to see the original document that demonstrates the name/gender change.
Payment is processed at the end of your appointment once your application has been checked.
Payment is processed by credit or debit card and we accept VISA, Mastercard, and AMEX. Contactless is not available.
We take payment in Australian Dollars only. You may be charged a fee by your bank if you use a UK card.
Please allow at least 6 weeks from lodging your application to receiving your passport.
Your new passport will be posted to your UK residential address listed on your application form. We send passports by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which is a registered and signed-for service.
There is no priority service or fast track option available. If you have urgent travel within three weeks, please CLICK HERE.
We will give your previous passport back to you at the end of your appointment.
If your passport is still in date, then you can continue to travel while we process your application. It will be automatically cancelled on our system 30 days after the new passport is issued. You should make sure the travel is booked in the name that is on the passport you are travelling with.
You should keep your passport for your records. Do not dispose of it.
