Voting in the 2025 Federal Election

The Australian federal election has been announced for Saturday 3 May 2025.  If you’re an Australian citizen overseas you can still have your say by voting at an overseas voting centre or by postal vote.

The Australian High Commission to the United Kingdom (Australia House) will be an in-person voting centre and postal vote collection centre from Wednesday 23 April to Friday 2 May (further information below).  All eligible Australians both living in or visiting the United Kingdom will be able to vote. The Australian High Commission will not be open for voting on Saturday, 3 May 2025.

If you’re in the UK and unable to make it to Australia House, it is recommended that you apply for a postal vote.  Postal vote packs will be sent from Australia, so you are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

To be eligible to vote, you must be enrolled.  You can enrol, update your details or check your details on the AEC website.

Postal Votes

If you are overseas and are unable to vote in-person, you can apply for a postal vote.

Postal vote packs will be sent to you by international courier from Australia commencing three weeks before polling day.  The latest date to request an overseas postal vote from the AEC is 6pm, Wednesday 30 April 2025.  Please note this may be too late for your postal vote to reach you and you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.  If you provided an email address or phone number when applying for a postal vote, you will receive an automatic notification when it is dispatched.

If you did not provide an email address or phone number and your postal vote does not arrive within 10 days from the date you submitted your application, call the AEC on +61 2 6160 2600.

You can return your postal vote directly to the AEC in Australia, mail it to the Australian High Commission in London or drop it off in person at the Australian High Commission in London no later than 6.00pm, Thursday 1 May 2025.

The cost to return your postal vote by courier or mail to the Australian High Commission in London or to the AEC in Australia is your responsibility.

For your postal vote to be counted it must be completed before 6pm AWST time 3 May 2025, and received by the AEC in Australia by 6pm Friday 16 May 2025 AEST.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Security:  The polling place will involve security screening.  Please do not bring bags/luggage or backpacks.  There are no storage facilities and bags/luggage/backpacks are not permitted inside the voting hall.  You will need valid photo identification, such as your drivers’ licence or passport.  Prohibited items include knives and sharp, offensive weapons, liquids except for non-alcoholic with sealable lids & water bottles.

Peak periods:  Long queues form at peak periods, particularly between 12pm – 2pm and after 5pm.  Saturday during pre-polling is the busiest period, and delays may be experienced.  We encourage Australians to avoid these times, if possible.

Queues:  Australians should join the queue on the Aldwych side of Australia House.  Unfortunately, with the likelihood of a queue outside of the High Commission, some will not be protected from any inclement weather.

Bathroom facilities:  The Australian High Commission does not have public restrooms or baby changing facilities.

If you can't vote because you are overseas, you need to advise the AEC by completing an Overseas Notification Form.
